Technical Manager with at least 10 yrs experience in a manufacturing environment and at least 5 yrs experience managing personnel involved in tool fabrication, assembly and debugging.
Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the on-time/in-budget completion of all tooling projects. Responsible for ensuring that all tooling projects result in robustly operating tools that consistently produce quality product at the required rates. Responsible for establishing and maintaining staffing and equipment in order to achieve goals of the Tool Room. Requires a 2-yr engineering, technical or management degree or substitute experience; a 4-yr bachelor’s degree in engineering, technical or management discipline is preferred.
- Provide leadership to a team of Tool & Die Makers, WEDM/CNC Operators and Tool Room support personnel responsible for the fabrication, assembly and debugging of complex progressive stamping dies.
- Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the on-time/in-budget completion of all tooling projects. Responsible for ensuring that all tooling projects result in robustly operating tools that consistently produce quality product at the required rates. Jointly responsible for successful transfer of tooling to Manufacturing along with Project Engineering and Design Engineering functions.
- Responsible for the scheduling of all tooling resources in order to achieve the goals of the Tool Room group. Set milestones and deadlines, assign responsibilities, monitor progress and report status to management.
- Establish and maintain a staffing plan for Tool Room that provides the human resources necessary for the effective and efficient completion of all tooling projects. Interviews candidates and otherwise supports HR during recruiting, interviewing and candidate selection process. Assist VP of Engineering in the preparation of annual staffing plans for Engineering.
- Establish and maintain an equipment plan for Tool Room that provides the machine tool/fabrication technology capable of producing complex progressive stamping dies according to schedule and at the level of quality desired.
- Responsible for selection and management of key W-A tooling subcontractors/suppliers. Responsible for setting and following criteria for when, how much and what type of work is subcontracted to outside vendors in order to maintain tooling project budget and schedule targets while adhering to W-A Tool Design and Construction standards and product quality requirements.
- Assist in developing the annual budget for the Tool Room.
- Participate in Tooling Kickoff, Specification Review, Design Review and Lessons Learned (Post Mortem) Meetings.
- Hold Tool Room Team meetings as necessary to communicate important information to team members.
- Assist in interfacing with customer on technical and schedule-related issues. Assist in communicating program progress to customer as required.
- Mediate conflicts between departments. Forge compromise and consensus between team members.
- Assist in identifying areas for continued improvement and opportunities to gain organizational knowledge.
- Participate in customer, internal and registrar quality system audits.
- Establish and execute a comprehensive training program to ensure that all Tool Room members have the opportunity to update and increase their skill set as it pertains to their individual job function.
- Perform Team Member Performance Appraisals for all direct reports as required.
- Discipline, and if necessary, terminate, team members that violate Company Policies or consistently fail to meet established goals/objectives in accordance with Human Resources procedures and guidelines. Document thoroughly all disciplining activities with HR Manager.
- Support Sales and New Product Development Teams. May assist in identifying potential leads and opportunities.
- 18) Continually monitor and communicate the importance of safety in the workplace. Promote the safe operation of all shop equipment. Safety guards/sensors are never to be compromised or short-circuited.
- Ensure that the Tool Room is maintained in a very clean and organized manner.
- Promote cleanliness and safety throughout the entire company.
- Maintain integrity of the W-A Tool Room and Engineering files/databases.
- Other duties as assigned by VP of Engineering or President.
- Minimum of 10 yrs experience in a manufacturing environment and at least 5 yrs experience managing personnel involved in tool fabrication, assembly and debugging. Experience in automotive and/or medical industries is preferable. Experience with high-volume and/or tight-tolerance progressively stamped metal products is also preferable.
- Requires a 2-yr engineering, technical or management degree or substitute experience; a 4-yr bachelor’s degree in engineering, technical or management discipline is preferred.
- Experience creating and monitoring department budgets and/or capital equipment expenditures.
- Ability to read blueprints and other technical documents. Familiar with CAD software. Understanding of ANSI/ISO drawing standards and GD&T dimensioning preferable.
