Mold Maker with at least 10 yrs experience assembling and debugging complex progressive molds. Responsible for fabrication of tool components to within +/- .0001” of drawing/CAD geometry (where required) utilizing common tool & die and machine shop equipment. Also responsible for the fitting, assembly and assisting in the debugging of complex progressive molds from fabricated and purchased components. Capable of working independently yet may require significant supervision. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and successfully completed apprenticeship; 2-yr technical degree strongly preferred.
Responsible for fabrication of tool components to within +/- .0001” of drawing/CAD geometry (where required) utilizing common tool & die and machine shop equipment such as: metal band saws, manual milling machines, drill presses, metal lathes and surface/form grinders.
- Fit and assemble complex progressive molds from fabricated and purchased components using assembly drawings and/or CAD layouts.
- Assist in the analysis and correction of problems with complex progressive molds to ensure stamped product is consistently produced according to drawing dimensions/specifications and at the required run rates.
- Document thoroughly any tool modifications implemented on the shop floor in order to produce a successful tool and/or improve its performance for subsequent updating of the Engineering database.
- Responsible for adherence to tooling project schedules and budgets as established by Project Engineering and/or Supervisor, Mold Maintenance & Repair.
- Assist in the setup and operation of various styles and sizes of punch press equipment and ancillary equipment such as material payout/take-up reeling equipment, stock straighteners, oilers, degreasers, etc. for the purpose of debugging or sampling new or modified tooling. Such equipment may reside in either the Tool Room or Manufacturing areas; in the case of the latter, it may require the completion of Press Sheets to record press operation activity and Die Repair Forms to record any tool service provided.
- Assist Engineering with documenting tool setup procedures on Stamping Tool Setup Forms.
- Jointly responsible for successful transfer of tooling to Manufacturing along with Design and Project Engineering functions.
- Participate in Design Review and Lessons Learned (Postmortem) Meetings.
- Assist in the instruction and mentoring of Tool Room apprentices.
- Maintain integrity of W-A Design Engineering files/databases.
- Strictly adhere to company Safety Policy and procedures.
- Maintain and operate all shop equipment in a safe manner and within the bounds of which the equipment was intended to operate. Safety guards/sensors are never to be compromised or short-circuited.
- Promote cleanliness and safety throughout the entire company.
- Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Mold Maintenance & Repair or Molding Department Manager.
10 yrs experience fabricating, assembling, and debugging progressive molds. Experience with high-volume tight-tolerance tooling preferable.
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and successfully completed apprenticeship; 2-yr technical degree strongly preferred.
- Ability to assist in the debugging of complex molds, including the capability of diagnosing and addressing problems with related functions.
- Ability to read blueprints and other technical documents. Familiar with CAD software. Understanding of ANSI/ISO drawing standards and GD&T dimensioning preferable.
- Knowledge of metal stamping and/or injection molding industries and practices.
- Understanding of die sensors, vision inspection, and/or related technology is preferable.
- Knowledge of quality inspection tools and methods preferable. Capable of utilizing precision measurement instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauge pins/blocks, height/depth gauges and comparators.
- Knowledge of tool steels and their applications including their heat-treated and tempered properties. Knowledge of carbide materials highly preferable.
- Some knowledge of commonly molded plastic resins.
- Good analytical and computational skills. Capable of performing shop mathematics including geometric and trigonometric calculations.
- Participate actively in a team-oriented environment.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience working in an environment having a registered quality system is a plus.
